Job Description
Steptoe & Johnson LLP, a Washington, DC-based Am Law 100 law firm, is seeking an Enterprise Database Engineer. The person in this position is responsible for installing, configuring and testing the implementation of our enterprise database solutions. This includes standing up, maintaining, and decommissioning SQL Server instances according to industry best-practices and logically integrating the data housed within the firm's enterprise applications into both new and existing data structures. This individual will collaborate with the various technical architects in employing leading edge, secure enterprise database solutions - from design to implementation. This position requires extensive knowledge of Microsoft technologies such as SQL Server, Active Directory, IIS, Power BI, and Power Shell. The Enterprise Database Engineer will also act as a subject matter expert for all enterprise databases and the integration of the information housed in those databases as it relates to the solution design. This will often translate to assisting a variety of departments in their reporting efforts and the maintenance of associated software.
Essential Functions
  • Participates in the installation and maintenance of enterprise servers, which includes installing new software releases and system upgrades, evaluating and installing patches, and conducting application migrations
  • Assists IT and other departments across the firm when troubleshooting database performance or connectivity issues
  • Co-plans and designs strategies with the Enterprise Applications Engineering Supervisor and Enterprise Applications Architect for the implementation of database servers, web servers and application servers
  • Functions as the subject matter expert on projects to implement or enhance and test enterprise applications when integrating with enterprise data and databases
  • Performs complex configuration, change management and testing activities to support designed architecture and integration between all database solutions
  • Troubleshoots and resolves complex technical problems with ERP systems to include database and database server problems
  • Manages the integrity of security design and engineering for enterprise data and database servers
  • Provide the enterprise application and systems engineers with advanced database modeling and design - including the development of tables, views, stored procedures, user-defined functions and triggers as needed
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for Steptoe when engaging with contractors from database administration as a service (DBAaaS) vendors
  • Use understanding of project requirements and the firm's technical architecture to select the appropriate database platforms for applications
  • Effectively prioritize and manage multiple concurrent projects keeping in-house customers informed of status and meeting critical deadlines
  • Assisting customers both within IT and in other departments with existing and new reports in a variety of form factors (Power BI, Excel, SQL jobs, Integration Builder rules)
  • Work with applications engineers to create administration documentation for IT Administrators
  • Provides subject matter expertise and support to IT Operations for the purpose of executing, supporting and managing enterprise data and database solutions implemented as well as for advanced troubleshooting and issue resolution
Minimum Qualifications
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Has the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and effectively
  • Has a strong willingness to learn
  • Able to accept user feedback from internal firm employees/departments and adjust the solutions accordingly
  • Experience working in virtualized environment (VMware experience is a plus)
  • Experience with Windows 2016, Windows 2019+ and related Microsoft server technologies such as IIS and SQL
  • Experience with Power BI - both Server and Desktop
  • Experience with Windows 10/11 and related Microsoft desktop technologies such as SCCM
  • Strong knowledge and proven record of scripting in T-SQL
  • 2 - 4 years' experience in managing large enterprise databases and database servers that house them
  • 2 - 4 years' experience designing and deploying SQL server instances in Microsoft SQL 2016+ (Clustering, Log Shipping, and AOAG experience is a plus)
  • 2 - 4 years' experience in monitoring and maintaining database and server performance with the ability to tune SQL database and server settings to improve performance
  • 2 - 4 years' experience in designing and deploying enterprise database backup and recovery solutions

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in or equivalent certification from an accredited technical training school or equivalent (2 - 4 years) experience in IT

Work Environment

  • Available to work 9:00 - 5:30 pm Monday through Friday.
  • Hybrid work arrangements may be available for this position.
  • Extra weekday and weekend hours may be required for special programs or events
  • Must be available to work beyond regular hours when necessary
  • Must be able to work under tight deadlines and stressful situations
  • Must have ability to work independently
