The Chesapeake Bay Foundation seeks a Development Intern to be based at the Philip Merrill Environmental Center located in Annapolis, MD.

Established over 50 years ago, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) is the nation’s leading conservation organization dedicated solely to restoring and protecting the Chesapeake Bay, our nation’s largest estuary. With 200,000 members, an annual operating budget of $26 million, and a $55 million endowment, CBF’s 190 full time staff work in offices in Annapolis and Easton, MD; Richmond and Virginia Beach, VA; Harrisburg, PA; Washington, DC; and in 15 field education program locations across the Bay watershed.

CBF's headquarters - the Philip Merrill Environmental Center – in Annapolis is the world’s first USGBC LEED platinum building. In 2014, CBF opened the Brock Environmental Center in Virginia Beach; the Brock Center is the tenth certified Living Building and one of the most energy efficient, environmentally smart buildings in the world.



DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

The mission of Development is to provide financial resources for CBF to meet its long-term vision of saving the Bay. It establishes and implements strategies to motivate donors to contribute to the organization's programs and projects. The Gift Officer team focuses primarily on supporting donors and their interests through major gifts from individuals, corporations, foundations, and planned giving opportunities.

CONTEXT OF THE POSITION

This position assists the Gift Officer and Development Teams in their activities to identify, solicit, and steward private funding support for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s annual operating needs and campaign initiatives. The intern will support the team as they work with donors in key regions across the watershed.

Essential functions include:
 
  • Shadow the Director and Gift Officers individually and join group and departmental meetings to better understand the organizational structure and how the team works together to implement development strategies
  • Attend events, educational opportunities, and other activities (e.g., oyster cultivation and restoration) that provide an “on-the-ground” experience with CBF environmental education programs and program staff
  • Assist Research staff and Gift Officers in qualifying prospects, including businesses and foundations
  • Assist in making thank you calls to recent donors to help further qualify and steward them
  • Assist with data entry into the Constituent Relationship Management (CRM) system to assist staff with updating their portfolios/actions and tracking donor engagement strategies
  • Special projects and activities to support the group as they arise and are assigned


PREFERRED PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
 
  • Student pursuing bachelor’s degree with interest and/or low-level experience in working with membership, annual giving and/or major gift solicitation, alumni groups, and/or campaign experience.
  • Successful candidate will demonstrate excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; experience with preparation of funding requests; an ability to work effectively with volunteers; an ability to work as a member of a multi-dimensional team.
  • Excellent time management skills needed to handle multiple, concurrent projects.
  • Proficiency in computer systems and willingness to learn new platforms.
  • Experience in a mission driven, environmental advocacy and educational organization is desirable.
