Position Overview

United to Beat Malaria (Beat Malaria), formerly known as Nothing But Nets, is the world's largest grassroots campaign fighting to end malaria, a preventable disease which claims the life of a child every two minutes. Beat Malaria brings together UN partners, advocates, celebrity champions, donors, and organizations to raise awareness, funds, and voices around the fight to end this historic injustice. Working together, we have protected more than 39 million people from malaria through the distribution of more than 13 million bed nets, along with testing, treatment, and other vital interventions. Working together, we can be the generation to end malaria for good!

The United to Beat Malaria Communications Intern will report to the Associate of Communications and Digital Media. They will have the opportunity to work across the Beat Malaria portfolio including partnerships, fundraising, advocacy, and global health.

The Communications Intern will work with the Beat Malaria team to support the campaign's fundraising, advocacy, and global health initiatives, including but not limited to social media management, website management, research on best practice strategy, and supporting the development of materials, toolkits, reports, presentations, graphics, and blogs. Applicants should have an understanding of and/or interest in social impact communications. This is a paid opportunity and offers a rate of $16.10/hour.

An ideal Communications Intern would exhibit strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and interest in working on a variety of aspects as related to the campaign's initiatives. This role will include the following responsibilities:

Essential Functions

  • Support the campaign's communications efforts to meet partnership, advocacy, and fundraising goals.
  • Assist the Communications team in maintaining the campaign's editorial calendar and brainstorming content for the campaign's blog and social channels.
  • Help write and edit campaign digital content, including blog posts, social media content, and other campaign materials.
  • Work with the communications team to develop a series of audience profiles that help our campaign better understand our supporters across our advocacy, fundraising, and global health team sub-teams.
  • Help design social media toolkits and graphics.
  • Monitor for and share news about malaria and United to Beat Malaria and help maintain the campaign's media coverage archive.
  • Work with the communications team to research and identify key media contacts for appropriate campaign stories and events.
  • Help the Communications team pull data and analyze the campaign's digital performance.
  • Support the campaign team to update materials and collateral with new messaging.
  • Support the campaign team to draft fact sheets, press releases, media advisories, refugee impact stories, and other communications materials.
  • Support the Communications team in the promotion, measurement, and content of the new website.
  • Support campaign communications surrounding key celebrity ambassador trips and appearances.
  • Assist with campaign events.
  • Provide administrative support as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Selection Criteria

  • Candidate must be enrolled in a degree-granting program during the internship or must be a recent graduate (within 8 months of graduation) of a college or university.
  • Background knowledge in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or Global Health preferred.
  • Applicants should have an understanding of and experience with communications, journalism and/or public relations.
  • Applicants should have an understanding of and experience with social networking and blogging and have their own presence on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
  • Experience with data analytics platforms like Sprout Social and/or Google Analytics preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Experience in Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Experience with Adobe platforms including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign preferred by not required.
  • Ability to take initiative and be a self-starter.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle stress.
  • Ability to meet regular attendance/tardiness policy.
  • Must have a personal laptop computer and access to the Internet.
  • Must be available to work a maximum of 29 hours per week.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
